How to make a roof in Cod Radiant

ok here's my simple guide on making roofs that will save you loads of time if you are making maps...

start with a house block (this can be whatever your house is - open, detailed, whatever. This one is 114 units high, the height we make 1 storey.
Start by adding a block to the top of it which matches the floor area, but is about 50 percent higher. make sure your house is an even number of units wide!
Image

bisect your block - make a cut into two EXACTLY EQUAL PARTS
Image

now select the lefthand block and make a cut from 8 units down from the top/midpoint to the corner (which MUST be the same as the corner of the wall below)
Image
SHIFT RETURN will cut it but leave the other parts.. now make another cut from the midpoint top of the brush to a point at the edge but 8 points above the corner.
Image

the second cut leaves you with this if you delete the top triangle.
Image

ok, now select the diagonal roof and drag it carefully down and to the left in 6, 7 or 8 grid resolution so you extend it only once. If you do it in 1 or 2 you may inadvertently drag it sideways and wreck it
Image

Repeat the diagonal 8 point cuts on the other block (righthand side)
Image

Now extend the two roof halves out to overhang the front of the house - you can do this by locking the x and z axis on the toolbar, so only y moves are made, preventing you from stretching the roof into its neighbouring piece etc, which will disrupt the symmetry
Image

now select the two triangular chunks of attic and make 2 6 unit wide cuts - one on each eave, to make the attic hollow
Image
Image

now select the 2 roof pieces and in Z view (looking down) cut off the overhangs (use shift return to keep them!)
Image

now deselct the roofs, reselct the 2 larger pieces and make another cut to cut off the other overhangs
Image
this way you have an 8 part roof, 4 parts to a side
Image

now to texture it all. ctrl shift and left click to select the face only of the top 8 roof pieces
Image

tile it - oops! the tiles face the wrong way
Image

ctrl shift select the 4 right hand roof faces and hit S. rotate the textures by 90 degrees
Image

repeat on the lefthand side, rotating the tiles by 270 degrees
Image

now shift ctrl click on the 10 faces of the trim and paint them with stone or concrete trim
Image

now ctrl shift select the 6 lower eave overhang faces and paint them with wood
Image

ctrl shift select the 4 outer faces of the eaves and paint them (2 triangles on each side of the house)
Image

paint your 4 walls (using S and FIT 2x1 textures to each side)
Image

so it looks ok, and inside your attic - look no lag causing textures in the non-visible part of your building
Image

and a nice tight angle on your roof corner so if you do use the attic then the pointfile won't sneak through any holes in your portals
Image

go get em
